Police chief honoured

Police chief honoured

I see our local Police Chief Constable has been awarded a CBE in the Queen's birthday honours list. For what may I ask?

"Mr Vine, who oversaw the security operation at the G8 summit in Gleneagles two years ago, received the award for services to policing."

Um, excuse me for pointing this out, but doesn't he receive his salary for "services to policing"? These awards should be for charity work etc, actions above and beyond your working life for which, ordinarily, you would receive no recompense, not for doing the job you are paid to do.

Robin, I agree with your point regarding civil servants where it is directed at the sharp end, where people do good work, under difficult conditions, for not much pay. However, I do not think this applies at the very top level, where Mr. Vine's pay is more than sufficient recompense.

You may not agree with it, but public servants have been awarded honours precisely because their pay is capped. As tax payers, we all resist paying lots of money in salaries. If he were not in the public service, perhaps he could earn a lot more money than he was paid for policing.
That's the argument - the inciteful comment that this is honours for the boys is exactly right and traditionally most people have accepted that public servants deserved recognition (which costs nothing) to paying them more.
