Phew What a Weekend

This weekend we've had my eldest daughter's 15 birthday sleepover (tent city in our back garden), my youngest daughter's school show rehersals and my son's cub camp. Boy, it's great to be back at work for a rest :)

Trackback Spam

Over the last couple of days I've been getting hammered by trackback spam. My spam count, via Spam Karma, as gone from 400 to 1,500. If you are getting the same problem then you should consider downloading Spam Karma, none of the spam has hit my blog and the only reason I know about it is because Spam Karma keeps a count of it. Sounds like Scoble's got the same problem too.

Smalltalk Cookbook #1.1 Accessing Substrings

This recipe is for Dolphin Smalltalk. To run the code, cut and paste it into a workspace and “Evaluate It”

Problem
You want to access or modify just a portion of a string, not the whole thing. For instance, you've read a fixed-width record and want to extract the individual fields.

Solution

| aRecord attributes |

"Create a string to represent customer record"
aRecord := '01 Gary Short 24/01/1970 gary@garyshort.org'.

"Split the record into attributes"
attributes := aRecord subStrings.

"Show the attributes collection in the Transcript window"
Transcript show: attributes printString.

Return to Smalltalk

At last night’s Extreme Tayside meeting we were looking at code katas and I was working with Barry Carr, who’s weapon of choice for the evening was Smalltalk. Working away on the code katas made me realise just how much Smalltalk I’d forgotten since I last used it.

To remedy that situation I intend to get back into the language again and to do this I have decided to work through the recipes in the Perl Cookbook, and as much as possible, recreate them in Dolphin Smalltalk. So watch out for infrequent postings on this.

AJAX Talk

Last night I delivered my AJAX talk, and apparently I didn’t suck too much. There were a couple of questions that came up that I was not 100% sure of the answers and said I’d answer them here, so here goes.

  • Does AJAX work over SSL. Yes it does. SSL is transparent to the user agent and so if the url specified is https then the traffic created by XMLHttpRequest will be acted upon just like any other traffic.
  • Can I send XML data to a service via AJAX. Yes you can. You would do something similar to the following:

    //…code to create create an XMLHttpRequest object

    //…code to create XML parser and load XML data

    xmlReq.open(“POST”, “URL_to_service.cgi”, true);
    xmlReq.send(xml_doc_object_created_above);

    //…other processing / tidy up code

The slide deck and example code is available here (MD5: 76C29FB919486486F10AA86BAF025D5F), if you’d like them. Please get in touch if you have any questions.

Dave Winer and BitTorrent

Over on his blog Dave Winer talks about Rocketboom distributing a “best of Rocketboom” mega file via BitTorrent. I think this is a great use of the medium and when the Open 2007 is over and done with, we’ll release all the the podcasts and vlogs via BitTorrent as well.
